Discover the village of artists and creators of Château d'Oléron

Discover the village ...

With its imposing citadel as a backdrop, its wild marshes and its shimmering huts, Château-d'Oléron offers picturesque island landscapes frozen in time. In the Portet district along the channels, the authentic little wooden huts testify to the ancestral oyster farming activity of the island of Oléron. Some are still used by oyster farmers while others are now home to abundant artistic creativity. Craftsmen, creators and restorers have taken over the premises to create a veritable village of artists in the heart of a bucolic natural environment. Head to the port of Château-d'Oléron to discover this inspiring place!

A superb color palette that dazzles

Marennes-Oléron being the first oyster basin in Europe, it is not surprising that the ports and oyster villages are part of the decor here! How pleasant it is to stroll through these little havens of peace punctuated by the tides, observing the comings and goings of the flat boats loaded with oysters towards the wooden huts installed along the channels, usually reserved for handling precious seashells. At Château-d'Oléron, however, art and oyster farming have come together in a unique project with the desire to give the huts a second life and to safeguard this unique heritage. The result is breathtaking! For twenty years, an anthology of artists, each more talented than the next, has transformed the obsolete and unoccupied cabins into small studios, workshops, stalls or art galleries, and have settled there as residences, generously encouraged by the town hall. From 20 to 80 m2, these huts have neither sanitation nor running water: they remain places of professional activity for the artists and not dwellings.
