Located in a large building in the heart of Saint-Pierre d'Oléron, the Museum of the Island of Oléron concentrates 6000 years of history and culture in one place, from the Neolithic period to the present day.

By its very origin and nature, the Musée de l'île d'Oléron is a place for exhibiting and promoting local heritage. Designated a "Musée de France" by the Ministry of Culture, this museum has established itself as a leading institution on the island. Once through the entrance, visitors are invited to wander through a thematic journey across several chronological spaces.

Between light and dark, the museum design presents a harmonious narrative for the visit, like a journey through the eras and economic activities of the island: viticulture, resin tapping (the harvesting of pine resin), salt production, fishing, oyster farming… Paleoanthropological remains, jewelry, metals, paintings, traditional costumes and headdresses, agricultural machines, models, photos… nearly 500 collector's items are on display for the pleasure of the eyes and the pleasure of learning!

By presenting 19th ^- century lifestyles through a richly furnished house, the museum allows visitors ample opportunity for imagination and perspective: objects, kitchen utensils, furniture, and a series of unique pieces immerse us in the daily lives of Oléron Island's inhabitants. Several multimedia displays are also available: oyster farming is presented through the screening of the historical film "Oyster Fishing on Île d'Oléron," filmed in 1907 at the Château d'Oléron.
