Potager du Roy Gardens, Parks in Rochefort

The Potager du Roy in Rochefort is a charming and historic green space, which testifies to the importance of gardens in the port city's past. It is not the "grand" Potager du Roi at Versailles, but a local garden with its own history and purpose. It is generally free to enter during its opening hours.

A Historical and Useful Heritage

The current Potager du Roy in Rochefort was already a vegetable garden in the 19th century, and even part of the castle garden that preceded the founding of the new town. From the end of the 17th century, descriptions mention the presence of fruit trees, a flowerbed and an enclosed vegetable garden. The location of Rochefort, chosen by Louis XIV to establish his arsenal, required places of agricultural production to supply the crews and the growing population. Naval surgeons, for example, were keen to cultivate essential medicinal plants such as wormwood, thyme and rosemary there. Raw materials such as flax and hemp were also produced there, essential for the manufacture of sails and ship ropes.

An Educational Garden and an LPO Refuge

Today, surrounded by walls, the Potager du Roy has regained an educational vocation. It has become an ideal awakening space for budding gardeners from Rochefort schools, who learn the basics of agriculture and biodiversity there under the guidance of the town gardener. Beyond the traditional vegetable garden, rich in various varieties of local vegetables, the garden is a place where the Town of Rochefort strives to preserve biodiversity. In 2005, the Potager du Roy became an LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) Refuge, formalizing its commitment to the protection of local fauna and flora.

The City of Rochefort wishes to continue to make this heritage site an educational garden, while organizing visits, cultural events (such as "Readings in the Vegetable Garden") and even concerts, so that the site is fully integrated into Rochefort life.
