    • The Rochefort Signal Tower is an emblematic element of the city's urban and maritime landscape, a testament to its rich naval past and its communications systems.

A Rich Past Linked to the Arsenal

The Signal Tower did not always have this function. Originally, it was the bell tower of the first parish church of Saint-Louis, built in 1686. This church, which had been enlarged by the Lazarists, was later deconsecrated and partially destroyed after the construction of the new Saint-Louis Church (the one we know today).

At the beginning of the 19th century, more precisely in 1791, following the French Revolution, the old church served as a warehouse for the Navy. It was at this time that its bell tower was razed and transformed to accommodate a signal mast. It then became the Signal Tower, a strategic point for the Navy.

The Crucial Role of Maritime Communication

The main function of the Signal Tower was to communicate with the island of Aix and ships offshore. It allowed for the regulation of maritime traffic and provided information on the movements of vessels entering and leaving the Rochefort arsenal.

This communication system used a semaphore, a visual device composed of flags of various shapes and colors, hoisted according to a precise code. Despite the evolution of technologies, the Signal Tower remained operational until 1930, playing an essential relay role in the event of failure of other modes of communication.

Standing 26 metres high, it was for a long time one of the tallest structures in Rochefort, offering breathtaking views of the Charente estuary.

A Recovered Property and a Heritage Interest

The Signal Tower remained the property of the Navy until 2002 , when it was returned to the town of Rochefort. In 2008, the town created a multimedia space there, highlighting its history and function.

Today, the Signal Tower is recognized as an important part of Rochefort's heritage. It is often highlighted during cultural events. For example, during the European Heritage Days, it is generally open to the public, with exhibitions and sometimes conferences organized there.
