    • Dolus-d'Oléron is a charming town located in the heart of the island of Oléron. It is appreciated for its mix of historical heritage, preserved natural landscapes and its tourist dynamism.

      History and Ancient Heritage

The history of Dolus-d'Oléron dates back to medieval times, as evidenced by its rich heritage. The Church of Saint-André, built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. It houses a 17th-century gilded wooden altarpiece and remains of the original 15th-century church, including its baptismal font.

The name of the commune, "Dolus", comes from the Latin "Dolut", and it was even briefly renamed "Sans-Culottes" during the Revolution before becoming "Dolus-d'Oléron" in 1968.

Other heritage features include the Romanesque Priory of La Perroche, dating from the early 12th century (now privately owned), and the dovecote of the Domaine de la Cailletière, which looks like a feudal tower. Traces of human occupation can also be found from the Neolithic period, although the megaliths have now been destroyed or moved (such as the Galoche de Gargantua, which can be seen at the Musée de l'île d'Oléron).

A Natural Setting and Varied Beaches

Dolus-d'Oléron is particularly popular for its unspoiled natural setting and its beautiful fine sandy beaches, mainly facing southwest, on the " Wild Coast ".

      • La Plage de la Rémigeasse : located on the west coast, this fine sandy beach is very popular with families. Lifeguarded in season, it is ideal for swimming at high and low tide.
      • Vert-Bois Beach : This is a popular spot for swimming and water sports enthusiasts, especially surfing, thanks to its waves. Bordered by the national forest, it also offers picnic areas and hiking trails.
      • La Plage de la Perroche : nestled in a bay, this friendly family beach is home to a sailing school offering various water sports and a mooring point for boats.

Beyond the beaches, the town is home to rich ecosystems such as the Marais des Bris, an ideal place to observe local flora and fauna. The Marais aux Oiseaux aux Grissotières is a park open to the public since 1983, dedicated to the discovery and protection of wild and domestic fauna, including a heronry of Grey Herons and Little Egrets.

      Activities and Tourist Dynamism

The economy of Dolus-d'Oléron is largely based on tourism , oyster farming and fishing. The town offers a wide range of activities for all ages:

      • Water activities: surfing, sailing, paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking are easily available on the various beaches.
      • Hiking and biking: numerous trails and cycle paths allow you to explore the surrounding nature, from forests to marshes.
      • Iléo Water Park : a large complex with slides, a river with buoys and even an artificial surf wave, ideal for families.
      • Discover oyster farming: Visit colorful oyster huts, symbols of local activity, and taste the famous Marennes-Oléron oysters matured in the oyster beds. The Baudissière oyster farm offers a glimpse into this activity.
      • Family Activities: Myocastor Park offers a fun and eco-friendly visit to discover these animals. There are also activities such as mini-golf, equestrian centers and various workshops.
