    • PLANTS & FEATHERS IN POMMIERS-MOULONS: A VISIT TO AN OSTRICH FARM IN HAUTE-SAINTONGE

An ostrich farm to discover in Haute-Saintonge

In the heart of the Haute-Saintonge region, Plantes & Plumes welcomes visitors to Pommiers-Moulons, a few kilometers from Jonzac and Montendre, for an immersive experience in the world of ostrich farming. Created in 2015 following a complete career change, this ostrich farm in Charente-Maritime was born from Carole Minault 's passion for this surprising and impressive animal. After several internships and training courses, she developed a sustainable farm where every stage of the process is carefully controlled, from breeding to welcoming visitors.

The farm welcomes families, groups, schools, and leisure centers by appointment to discover the largest land bird in a calm and natural setting. Visitors walk close to the enclosures where the ostriches live and benefit from explanations from their breeder throughout the visit.

An educational visit focused on the ostrich

A visit to the farm offers a better understanding of this animal, often surrounded by misconceptions. Does the ostrich really put its head in the sand? Can it fly? How fast can it run? Why does it have such large eyes? Carole answers all these questions with simplicity and precision.

The tour retraces all the stages of the animal's life: the egg, incubation, the birth of the chicks, their growth, and their transition to adulthood. Visitors also discover the daily operations of an ostrich farm, feeding methods, the regulations governing this activity, and the care given to the animals. The farm prioritizes sustainable, self-sufficient farming practices, avoiding the systematic use of antibiotics and taking care to prevent inbreeding.

Visits are organized by appointment, usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m. or 3 p.m., with the possibility of accommodating groups on other dates upon request.

A shop selling souvenirs and ostrich-related products

After exploring the farm, visitors can extend their visit with a visit to the Plantes & Plumes shop, which offers a selection of original ostrich-related products.

You'll find ostrich eggs (in season), handcrafted soaps, cosmetics, jewelry, plush toys, as well as decorative items and creations made from eggshells. A wonderful opportunity to take home an authentic souvenir of your visit or to find a gift for your loved ones.

The products are available directly from the farm and can also be found at some local markets, notably in Jonzac and Montendre, depending on the time of year.

A family business in the heart of the Charente countryside

This educational farm in Charente-Maritime is a popular outing for families wishing to discover an unusual animal while enjoying a preserved rural environment. Children observe the ostriches up close and learn about their way of life, while adults discover the realities of specialized farm farming.

The close proximity to the animals, the accessible explanations, and the time dedicated to discussion make each visit a pleasant experience. This discovery also provides a better understanding of the work of a farmer and the specific characteristics of a farm focused on animal welfare and the transmission of its expertise.
