A day at Chassiron lighthouse

Chassiron is a placeon the northern tip of Oleron Island. Rightly called the "end of the world", you can go there to spend a pleasant day with your family. Visit the lighthouse, the garden and the museum, stroll along the ocean bay, discover the rocky foothills and enjoy this attractive and rare natural environment!

You will see th lighthouse in the distance, rising from the top of its 46 meters, striped with white and black. The Chassiron lighthouse is situated in a strategic and dangerous place, the "Pertuis d'Antioche" (between the 2 island of Ré and Oléron) is known for its numerous shipwrecks and the lighthouse is an essential element of reference for the sailors, before being a tourist attraction ;) It is electrified since 1930 with a big bulb of 250w and since 1998, there is no more guardian in the lighthouse, everything is managed automatically. The lighthouse is open to visitors since 2007 for the enjoyment of young and old. You will need good sneakers to go up, because as you can imagine, there is no elevator and you will have to climb the 224 steps. What a panorama once up there! 360 degree visibility allows you to admire the entire coast of the island, and if you're lucky you'll also see Fort Boyard! Remember to take a jacket because it blows up there! Hold the little ones by the hand ...

Visit the Chassiron lighthouse museum

I recommend you to take a ticket to visit the museum, housed in the former apartments of the guards. It is short enough to attract even the little ones, who will be passionate about the history of the lighthouse and the life of the sailors and farmers of the area. From April to September, it is interesting to note that you can participate in guided tours. To discover the natural marine environment of the "Pertuis d'Antioche" it is a good idea !

The lighthouse gardens

For lovers of French gardens (jardin à la française), visit the garden at the foot of the lighthouse. It is organized in the form of a "wind rose", supplemented by binoculars, information panels and audioguide terminals for the curious.

In the high touristic season, you will find restaurant next to the lighthouse. We had lunch at a nice creperie and our son went on an electric kart tour, he had a lot of fun! We continued our walk along the rocky shore near the lighthouse. Do not hesitate to come by bike, on the island of Oléron there are plenty of rental companies and it is a very practical and ecological way to discover the island ;)
