    • Fort Boyard is arguably one of France's most famous monuments, not for its past battles, but for being the setting for a world-famous game show of the same name. This stone fortress, set in the middle of the sea, has a fascinating history.

      A Titanic and Laborious Construction

The idea of building a fortification at this strategic location, between the Isle of Aix and the Isle of Oléron, dates back to the 17th century, to the time of Louis XIV and his military engineer Vauban. However, Vauban himself is said to have deemed the project unfeasible, stating that it would be "easier to grasp the Moon with one's teeth than to attempt such a task in this place." The technical difficulties associated with sea currents and the lack of stable foundations were immense.

It was only at the beginning of the 19th century, under the impetus of Napoleon Bonaparte, that work on Fort Boyard really began in 1804. The aim was to protect the Rochefort Arsenal from English attacks, as the land-based cannons of the time did not have sufficient range to cover the distance between the islands.

Construction was a living hell. The stone blocks submerged to create the base were constantly washed away by the winter swell. After a break, work resumed in 1837 and was finally completed in 1866, after more than 60 years of work (and a staggering cost, equivalent to nine times that of the Arc de Triomphe!). The fort is 68 meters long, 31 meters wide and stands 29 meters high.

A Fortification That Quickly Becomes Obsolete

Ironically, by the time of its completion in 1866, advances in artillery had rendered the fort virtually useless. The range of modern guns now made it possible to defend the harbor from the coast. Fort Boyard was therefore never used militarily for its original purpose.

It was briefly used as a military prison in 1870-1871, holding up to 300 inmates, before being permanently decommissioned by the army in 1913 and abandoned for nearly 80 years , becoming a ruin in the middle of the ocean, and a refuge for birds. It was classified as a Historic Monument in 1950.

The Television Renaissance: The Fort Boyard Phenomenon

The true destiny of Fort Boyard came from the world of television. In 1989, the French production company Adventure Line Productions (ALP) had the idea of transforming this forgotten fortress into a TV game show set. The concept was born and the first episode of "Fort Boyard" was broadcast in 1990. It was an immediate and resounding success , not only in France but also internationally, making Fort Boyard a global icon.

For decades, the fort has been home to iconic characters (Father Fouras, Passe-Partout, Félindra, among others) and physical and intellectual challenges that captivate millions of viewers.

Access and Visit to Fort Boyard Today

Unfortunately, and this is a frequently asked question, Fort Boyard is not open to the public for interior tours. It is owned by the Charente-Maritime department, and its operation is reserved exclusively for the game show's production company.

However, it is quite possible to approach the "stone vessel" and admire it up close:

      • By boat: Many companies offer cruises around Fort Boyard from La Rochelle, Fouras, the island of Oléron (Boyardville or Saint-Denis-d'Oléron) and the island of Aix. This is the best way to observe it from all angles and learn more about its history thanks to the guides' commentary.
      • From the coast: it can be seen more or less clearly from the beaches of Fouras-les-Bains, the island of Oléron (notably Boyardville and Les Saumonards) and the island of Aix. With binoculars, the view is even more impressive.

Fort Boyard is currently undergoing a major €44 million renovation to protect it from the ravages of the ocean. To support this vital project, which is expected to be completed in 2028, a donation campaign has been launched through the Fondation du Patrimoine, allowing the public to contribute to the preservation of this iconic monument in preparation for its future opening to visitors.
