    • The Maison du Fier, located in Portes-en-Ré on the Île de Ré, is an essential place to understand the natural wealth and unique ecosystem of this island. It is both an interpretation center and the gateway to the Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve.

A Place Rooted in History and Nature

The Maison du Fier occupies former salt sheds in the old port of Portes-en-Ré. These buildings, which were used at the beginning of the 20th century to store the precious salt harvested from the surrounding salt marshes, were partly purchased by the Conservatoire de l'Espace Littoral in 1997 and renovated to become what they are today. Located at the gateway to the Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve, the Maison du Fier is managed by the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO), which underlines its strong commitment to raising awareness of biodiversity and the conservation of natural environments.

A Playful Immersion in the Rétais Ecosystem

The Maison du Fier offers a permanent exhibition entitled "Ré, île nature". This museum space is designed to be both educational and fun , aimed at young and old alike. The tour is interactive, inviting visitors to touch, breathe, observe and listen, in order to better understand the fauna, flora and natural history of the Île de Ré.

Within the exhibition, you will discover:

      • The permanent exhibition and museum space: remarkable specimens, illustrated panels and immersive display cases immerse you in the crucial role of marshes, forest and dunes in the ecological balance of the island.
      • Models and explanatory panels: genuine educational tools detail the formation of salt marshes, the specific halophilic flora (plants adapted to salt) and human activity linked to salt harvesting over the centuries.
      • The bird observatory: Located at the edge of the marshes, this platform offers a privileged vantage point for observing birds, particularly migratory species such as avocets, spoonbills, and waders. Spotting scopes and identification signs are available.
      • The outdoor interpretation trail: by following this landscaped path, you dive directly into the heart of the Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve, an area protected since 1980 for its exceptional ecological richness.

      Activities and Services Offered

Beyond the exhibition, the Maison du Fier is a dynamic activity center which offers:

      • Accompanied by LPO facilitators, guided nature outings allow you to discover the nature reserve in depth ("Birds and Nature" outings, "Nature Escapes", "The Nature Reserve with the Family", etc.).
      • Thematic activities such as plant printing are offered during workshops for a more creative approach to nature.
      • It is possible to rent binoculars, audio guides and even a telescope to optimize bird watching during your independent walks in the reserve.
      • La Maison du Fier has the Tourism & Handicap label, with facilities for people with reduced mobility, hearing impairments and visual impairments.
