    • The Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve is a jewel of biodiversity located at the northwest tip of the Île de Ré, in the commune of Portes-en-Ré. It is a site of major importance for ornithology, managed by the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) since 1981.

      A Unique and Protected Ecosystem

Created in 1980, this reserve covers more than 235 hectares and is composed mainly of former salt marshes, salt meadows and mudflats. This remarkable ecosystem provides ideal conditions for fauna and flora specific to Atlantic coastal wetlands. The history of the site is marked by salt-farming activity, with salt marshes exploited until 1976. Today, it is a true sanctuary for wildlife, where nature is left to its purest expression.

      A Paradise for Migratory Birds

Lilleau des Niges is recognized as an exceptional wintering and migration site, ranking among the 10 most important in France. Thousands of birds, both sedentary and migratory, find refuge there to feed, rest and reproduce. Among the emblematic species that can be observed there (depending on the season):

      • The Shelduck, a colorful duck emblem of the reserve.
      • The Bluethroat, a superb passerine bird.
      • The Black-winged Stilt, recognizable by its long red legs.
      • Waders such as avocets, curlews, black-tailed godwits, and black-bellied plovers.
      • Brent geese, spoonbills and many herons and egrets.

The diversity of the landscapes (marshes, dunes, surrounding forests) contributes to this ornithological richness.

      Access and Activities for Visitors

It is crucial to understand that the Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve is, above all, a protected area. Direct access to the reserve is strictly regulated and generally prohibited to the public so as not to disturb the wildlife, except for recreational shore fishing and non-motorized navigation in certain areas.

However, it is entirely possible to discover the reserve and its biodiversity through various means:

      • La Maison du Fier: Located nearby, the Maison du Fier is an eco-museum dedicated to the nature of the Île de Ré and the reserve. It is the ideal starting point for understanding the local ecosystem . It offers an exhibition and a shop.
      • Numerous hiking and cycling trails surround the reserve, allowing you to observe it from its surroundings. A walking loop of approximately 1 hour or 1.5 hours starting from the Maison du Fier offers superb viewpoints . Access to these trails is free.
      • The LPO regularly organizes themed nature outings supervised by guides. These outings, sometimes in the heart of the reserve for exceptional occasions, are an opportunity to learn to identify birds, understand their lifestyles and migration. Binoculars and telescopes are often loaned to participants.
      • At the Maison du Fier, it is possible to rent binoculars, audio guides and even telescopes to optimize your observations.
      • Throughout the year, especially in summer, special events are organized.
