About

  • English
    • Hidden in the heart of the city center behind a discreet facade on Rue des Dames, the La Rochelle Bunker offers a striking immersion into daily life during the Second World War. Built in utmost secrecy in 1941, this 280 m² watertight shelter served as headquarters for German officers and U-boat commanders.

Having remained closed and forgotten for over 70 years, the site has been preserved in its original state. Visitors can walk through armored corridors, dormitories, command offices, and a bar decorated with period marine frescoes.

The scenography accurately retraces the lives of the people of La Rochelle under the Italian and then German occupation, up to the heroic episode of the "La Rochelle Pocket", one of the last areas liberated in France in May 1945.
