The fountain was built in 1754 in the center of the public square, Place Colbert (then called Place de la Mairie). Its primary function was essential: it provided free drinking water to the neighborhood's residents. At the time of Rochefort's founding in the 17th century, access to drinking water was a major challenge, as the city was surrounded by marshes and brackish water. The ingenuity of engineers made it possible to capture water from distant sources, notably from Tonnay-Charente, and transport it to Rochefort via underground pipes. The fountain in Place Colbert was one of the main distribution points for this vital water.

Architectural Features and Classification

This fountain is an example of 18th-century architecture. It is imposing and consists of a monumental structure. Its historical and architectural importance was recognized very early on, since it was listed as a historical monument by decree of February 23, 1925. It is a work attributed to the architect Bourguignon. Although it has undergone modifications over time, its general appearance and its central role in the square have remained intact.

The Symbolism of Sculptures: The Ocean and the Charente

The most distinctive element of the fountain is undoubtedly the two allegorical sculptures that surmount it. They represent the Ocean and the Charente. These figures are not chosen at random:

• The Charente symbolizes the river that allowed the foundation of the arsenal and the development of the city, but also the source of fresh water which, after great engineering efforts, was able to be brought to the city for consumption.
• The Ocean represents Rochefort's openness to the maritime world, its vocation as a royal arsenal and its naval power.

These two figures come together to illustrate the supply of drinking water to the people of Rochefort, highlighting human ingenuity in taming nature and ensuring the basic needs of the population.

Today, the fountain on Place Colbert remains a major heritage site in Rochefort. It attracts the attention of visitors, symbolizes the city's glorious past, and contributes to the unique atmosphere of this iconic square, immortalized in film with " Les Demoiselles de Rochefort".
