Saint-Martin-de-Ré is in a way the capital of the island. The port and its small alleys have a crazy charm. Its fortifications, redesigned by Vauban, are classified as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Nearby, the Parc de la Barbette overlooks the sea. The citadel still accommodates prisoners of common law. The Ernest-Cognacq museum, named after the founder of the Parisian department store La Samaritaine from the island, housed in a 16th century hotel, has a collection of objects from the Retais heritage. The formerly fortified church of Saint-Martin offers a superb panorama of the island through its bell tower. You must first climb the 117 steps.
