    • A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE H. BEGEY VINEYARD IN VILLARS-LES-BOIS, IN THE HEART OF ROMANESQUE SAINTONGE

Discover a family estate nestled between vineyards, heritage, and expertise.

Located in Villars-les-Bois, in the heart of the Romanesque Saintonge region, the H. Begey Vineyard invites visitors to discover the world of Cognac and Pineau des Charentes through immersive experiences accessible to all. In an environment characterized by rolling landscapes, vineyards, and charming villages, this family estate has been perpetuating a winemaking tradition deeply rooted in the Charente region for generations.

Through visits, walks and sensory workshops, the estate offers a friendly approach to better understand the work of the vine, the richness of the terroir and the different stages that lead to the production of the region's emblematic products.

An immersion in the heart of the Charente vineyards

The H. Begey Vineyard offers several discovery trails allowing visitors to explore the landscapes that shape this part of Charente-Maritime. Guided by a smartphone, visitors follow a route punctuated with interactive stops that reveal the family history, the specific characteristics of the terroir, and the know-how related to vine cultivation.

The 3.8-kilometer walking trail takes you through a landscape of alternating vineyards, woods, and hillsides. From the very first steps, the path leads to beautiful panoramic views of the vineyards and the surrounding countryside. Along the way, participants discover the different stages of work carried out in the vineyards throughout the seasons, as well as the techniques used to obtain the grapes destined for the production of Cognac and Pineau des Charentes.

For those wishing to extend the experience, a second 10-kilometer route is accessible on foot or by bicycle. This walk allows for further exploration of the landscapes of Romanesque Saintonge while discovering the traditions and history that have accompanied the development of the estate for several generations.

The tours can be complemented by a picnic featuring local products, combining vineyard exploration, a walk in nature, and a tasting of regional specialties. Prepared with products selected from local producers, this picnic offers the opportunity to savor the region's gastronomic delights in a natural setting. This option is particularly popular with families, groups of friends, or visitors wishing to take their time and fully enjoy their exploration of the estate and the surrounding landscapes.

Understanding the know-how of Cognac and Pineau des Charentes

At the end of the walk, visitors are welcomed to the estate to discover the production facilities. The distillery tour provides a better understanding of the different stages involved in making Cognac, from harvesting the grapes to aging in the cellars.

The discussions with the family provide concrete insights into the winemaking profession and the specific characteristics of the local terroir. This encounter also allows one to discover the essential role of distillation and aging in the development of aromas.

The visit continues with a guided tasting of several of the estate's products. Visitors can thus discover the characteristics of Pineau des Charentes, a cocktail made from the estate's products, as well as different expressions of Cognac.

This educational approach promotes a better understanding of the links between the terroir, the grape varieties and the production methods that contribute to the identity of Charente spirits.

      Original sensory experiences

The estate also develops activities designed to offer a different way of discovering the world of Cognac and Pineau des Charentes. Among these, the Mystery Box offers a sensory experience centered on touch.

Using several specially designed boxes for the activity, participants must identify different elements related to the production cycle of vineyard products. This fun activity encourages discussion while providing a better understanding of the materials, tools, and elements that make up the winegrowing environment.

Suitable for families, groups of friends, businesses or private events, this experience is an original way to approach the wine heritage of the Charente region.

The Flavors Workshop to discover the transformation of grapes

With L'Atelier des Saveurs, the H. Begey Vineyard offers a deeper immersion into the different stages of Cognac production.

After discovering the family estate and its history, participants are invited to follow the evolution of the grapes through several successive tastings. From the distillation wine to the aged eau-de-vie, each stage allows them to observe the transformations that occur during the production process.

This educational approach highlights the aromatic subtleties, distillation techniques, and the role of aging in shaping the characteristics of Cognac. The workshop also provides a deeper understanding of the specific terroir and the traditions passed down within this family of winegrowers and distillers.

What is there to discover around the H. Begey Vineyard within a 30 km radius?

The Villars-les-Bois area offers numerous opportunities for exploration to complement a visit to the H. Begey Vineyard. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the paths that wind through the landscapes of Romanesque Saintonge, between vineyards, woods, and fields of grain. These routes allow visitors to appreciate the diverse rural landscapes that characterize this part of Charente-Maritime.

Less than 20 kilometers away, Saintes is a must-see thanks to its rich historical heritage. The Gallo-Roman amphitheater, the Arch of Germanicus, the banks of the Charente River, and the Abbaye aux Dames all bear witness to centuries of history. Walks along the river also offer the chance to discover a natural environment much appreciated by visitors.

The nearby town of Saint-Jean-d'Angély charms visitors with its historic center, shopping streets, and heritage linked to the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Further north, Saint-Savinien, nestled on the banks of the Charente River, invites leisurely strolls with its narrow streets, port, and panoramic views of the river.

Lovers of Romanesque heritage can also visit Aulnay, known for its church listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or discover the many Romanesque churches scattered throughout the villages of the region.

The local markets of Saintes, Matha, and Saint-Jean-d'Angély offer the opportunity to meet local producers and discover regional specialties. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, honey, cheeses, artisanal products, Pineau des Charentes, and Cognac all attest to the rich local gastronomy.

Between vineyards, historical heritage, charming villages, rivers, traditional markets and local producers, the area around the H. Begey Vineyard offers many opportunities to discover the riches of Romanesque Saintonge and Charente-Maritime.

Thank you to Julie from Domaine Begey for the warm welcome. After a hike that was difficult to download onto our phones (perhaps we should consider making some changes to this organization), we had a superb tour of the cellar with some innovative wines and a fantastic tasting. We recommend spending half a day there; you won't be disappointed. A group of friends from the Sancerre region
