Fontdouce Abbey is a fascinating historical site located in Charente-Maritime, not far from Saintes.
History and Foundation
Fontdouce Abbey was founded in 1111 by a monk of the Benedictine order. It enjoyed a period of prosperity and development during the 12th and 13th centuries, becoming an important religious and economic center in the region. However, like many abbeys, it suffered the consequences of the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution, which led to its partial destruction and secularization.
Architecture
Although partially in ruins, Fontdouce Abbey preserves magnificent remains that bear witness to its glorious past. You can admire:
- The abbey church: although only ruins remain, one can still distinguish the imprint of its Romanesque architecture, with Gothic elements added later.
- The chapter house: often well preserved in abbeys, it is a place where the monks met to make decisions.
- The cellar: used to store provisions, it often has impressive vaults.
- The gardens: The abbey is surrounded by landscaped gardens, sometimes inspired by medieval or monastic gardens.
Today
The site is open to the public and offers various activities:
- Guided tours to discover the history and architecture of the places.
- Cultural events: concerts, exhibitions and other events are regularly organized, particularly during the summer season.
- Receptions: the exceptional setting of the abbey is also rented for weddings, seminars and other private events.
