Dedicated to the Bishop of Saintes, Vivien, the current church is built on the site of three successive Christian buildings. The first, in the 6th century, was a basilica built around the Saint's tomb in an early Christian necropolis.

The second, before the 12th century was a priory occupied by regular canons razed after 1572. A new chapel is then built in 1617, demolished in 1840. The current building is a neoclassical church built between 1840 and 1845 by the architect Brossard, based on the model of early Christian basilicas.
