The Charente Valley is a natural site, classified "Natura 2000". The protection zone extends from Angoulême to Cognac, but the valley stretches approximately to Rochefort. At this level, the Charente estuary begins, as far as Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée. The river flows into the ocean, at its mouth, between Fouras-les-Bains and Port-des-Barques. The Charente has a very sinuous course, creating meanders and arms, sheltering in its bed long islands and small islets. The valley is home to many protected species, hence its classification. For the fauna, it is mainly the otter, the mink and the tortoise Cistude . The flora is also very interesting.
