The Church of Our Lady of Surgères, located in Charente-Maritime, is a remarkable Romanesque building whose construction began in the 11th century. It is particularly famous for its harmonious façade and its octagonal bell tower, typical of Saintonge architecture.
Its sculpted portal features archivolts decorated with plant motifs and figures. Inside, the nave is sober, inviting contemplation.
Over the centuries, additions and restorations have taken place, but the church has retained its essential Romanesque character. It is listed as a Historic Monument and remains a valuable testament to the region's Romanesque art.
