The Rochefort Transporter Bridge is an iconic landmark of the city and the last transporter bridge in France still in service. It is a feat of engineering and a unique testament to industrial and maritime history.

A Brief History of a Steel Giant

Inaugurated on July 29, 1900, the Rochefort Transporter Bridge is the work of engineer and builder Ferdinand Arnodin. Its construction lasted 27 months and met the crucial need to cross the Charente without hindering the navigation of sailing ships that had to go to the Rochefort Arsenal. Originally, it could carry horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians.

Despite the appearance of more modern bridges (a lifting deck bridge in 1967, then a 4-lane viaduct in 1991), the Transporter Bridge narrowly escaped demolition in the 1970s thanks to its classification as a Historic Monument in 1976. After a period of abandonment, it was put back into service in 1994 for pedestrians and cyclists. A major restoration project, carried out between 2016 and July 2020, allowed it to regain its original appearance from the beginning of the 20th century, reopening on its 120th anniversary.

An Ingenious and Spectacular Architecture

The Transporter Bridge is a fascinating example of the ingenuity of late 19th-century engineers.

• It consists of two impressive metal pylons, 50 meters high, which support a deck (or rigid span) located 50 meters above the highest waters of the Charente. The space between the piers is 129 meters.
• What makes this bridge unique is its suspended gondola system. A trolley slides on a rail system located on the upper deck. The gondola is suspended from this trolley, which allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross from one bank to the other (between Rochefort and Échillais) without hindering the passage of ships on the river.
• The structure is mainly made of steel, resting on concrete foundations, guaranteeing its stability against currents.

Current Operation and Visit

Today, the Transporter Bridge is a major tourist site and a lively attraction :

• The Crossing: The gondola still allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Charente. Crossings take place every 10 to 15 minutes, subject to good technical and weather conditions.
• Maison du Transbordeur: On the Échillais riverbank, the Maison du Transbordeur is an interpretation center that retraces the history of the bridge, its operation, and the life of its creator, Ferdinand Arnodin. It offers a fun, digital exhibition.
• Catering and ticket office : On the Rochefort bank, you will find for some time now a café-restaurant, a souvenir shop and the central ticket office for the bridge.
