    • The Saint-Louis Church in Rochefort is a major religious building in the city, marking the urban landscape with its imposing neoclassical architecture . It is located not far from Place Colbert and Rochefort Town Hall.

      A Rich Historical Past

The history of the Church of Saint-Louis is closely linked to that of Rochefort, a town founded in the 17th century by order of Louis XIV. Before the construction of the current church, there was a castle chapel dedicated to Saint Charles, enlarged in 1679 and erected as a parish under the name of Saint-Louis on November 28, 1686.

The building has suffered vicissitudes over time: enlarged in the 18th century, it was abandoned during the French Revolution and threatened ruin at the beginning of the 19th century. It was rebuilt in 1835-1838 under the direction of the architect Félix Garde, in a neoclassical style, while retaining the original bell tower dating from 1768.

The Saint-Louis church has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments since June 22, 1987.

      Remarkable Neoclassical Architecture

The Church of Saint-Louis stands out as one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in Charente-Maritime.

      • Its main facade is impressive, adorned with four monumental Corinthian columns supporting a triangular pediment sculpted with a cross.
      • A unique feature is its original bell tower which contrasts with its Renaissance style, rising on four levels and crowned with a stone dome.
      • The interior offers great homogeneity, with a rectangular nave flanked by side aisles. Ten arcades rest on large pillars decorated with Ionic capitals. Moldings, capitals and cornices are enhanced with gilding and trompe-l'oeil paintings, while the pillars display faux marble and antique motifs. The vault, restored in white, provides beautiful luminosity.
      • The high altar is surmounted by a large canopy supported by Corinthian columns, decorated with symbols such as the dove and the Paschal lamb.
      • The church is enriched with 19th-century stained-glass windows illustrating the life of Saint Louis, and liturgical furniture classified as a Historic Monument. It also contains the tomb of Michel Bégon, a historical figure of Rochefort.
