Saint-Pierre-d´Oléron is the geographical, economic and commercial center of the island. It owes its nickname of "capital" of the island of Oléron to the size of its population. The church with its 32 m high hexagonal bell tower was used as a bitter by sailors. On the site of the old cemetery, a lantern of the dead is erected. The writer and academician Pierre Loti is buried in the garden of "the ancestral home", a family home. The town hosts a museum of traditions and heritage of Oléron.
