About

  • English
    • Le Grand-Village-Plage is a commune located in the south of the island of Oléron, in Charente-Maritime. Despite its small area of only 6 km², it offers a great diversity of landscapes and activities, popular with families as well as sports and nature lovers.

A Natural Setting Between Beaches and Forest

Grand-Village-Plage is above all renowned for its magnificent fine sandy beaches, bordered by dunes.

      • Giraudière Beach is the best known and most popular, especially in summer when swimming is supervised . Facing due west, it is very popular for relaxation and water sports.
      • The more discreet Plage des Allasins is accessible after a walk or a bike ride of about 1.5 km through the forest and the dunes from the Écossais car park. Its distance from the road makes it a wilder and less frequented place, ideal for enjoying nature in complete tranquility.

These beaches are renowned spots for surfing, kitesurfing, and sand yachting, with designated areas for each sport. The advantage is that you can always swim there, whether at high or low tide. The national forest that precedes them, planted in the 19th century to fix the dunes, offers numerous cycle paths and hiking trails for pleasant walks.

      Heritage and Local Culture

Beyond its beaches, Le Grand-Village-Plage also presents a cultural and historical interest:

      • The Port des Salines is a must-see site that bears witness to the island's ancient salt-making activity. Here you can discover the history of salt production, visit a salt marsh, and observe the traditional skills of the salt worker. Guided tours are regularly organized.
      • The Eco-peasant House allows visitors to understand traditional Oléron architecture and the know-how associated with the use of eco-materials. Participatory projects are even organized to introduce the public to these ancestral techniques.
      • The town centre of Grand-Village-Plage preserves evidence of rural Oléron architecture with its low houses, granaries with external staircases, wells and "quéreux" (interior courtyards).

      Activities and Leisure

The Grand-Village-Plage offers a multitude of activities for all ages:

      • The town is crisscrossed by cycle paths and footpaths , allowing you to discover the island by bike or on foot, through the marshes, the forest and along the seaside.
      • Besides surfing and land yachting, you can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, catamaran sailing and kayaking.
      • Nearby, Le Petit Train de Saint-Trojan offers a 12 km round trip through wild landscapes to the Maumusson strait.
      • In season, the town offers numerous activities, markets (including night markets), shows and children's/teenagers' clubs.
      • Its privileged location in the south of the island allows easy access to other emblematic sites such as Château-d'Oléron and its fortifications.
