When we talk about unusual visits, it's hard not to mention the caves of Meschers-sur-Gironde. Far from classic museums, these troglodyte cavities are a dive into history, shaped by the ocean millions of years ago and then developed by man.
The Meschers caves, particularly those of Matata and Régulus, are not just holes in the rock. They have been inhabited since prehistoric times, served as a habitat for fishermen and sailors, and even as a refuge during wars. The guided tour takes you through the ages, revealing the rich heritage and the fascinating geological formation of the cliffs. It is a unique experience that combines history, nature and a touch of mystery.
Visiting the caves of Meschers-sur-Gironde means taking a break from time, exploring a captivating natural and historical site.

Although it is impossible to visit the interior of Fort Boyard, the idea of an evening with a breathtaking view of this Charente-Maritime icon is in itself an unusual and memorable experience. Several providers offer unique getaways to approach the fortress as the sun sets. It is a striking visual spectacle in a magical atmosphere. These sunset sea trips allow you to capture magnificent shots and experience a special moment, far from the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
What a rare opportunity to experience this iconic monument from a different perspective! Watching Fort Boyard light up or stand out against the twilight horizon creates unforgettable memories.
Ile Madame, the smallest of the Charente islands, is a place of wild beauty and particular charm. It is accessible at low tide by a submersible road called the "Passe aux Bœufs". It is an unusual crossing that invites caution and observation.
Once you have discovered the Passe aux Bœufs, you will reach this preserved island where calm and nature reign. There is an aquaculture farm, fishing huts, a pebble cross and an ideal landscape for oyster farming and salt harvesting. The experience of crossing and discovering this small island cut off from the world at high tide is a real adventure for the curious.
Be sure to check the tide times before going there, to avoid being trapped by rising waters!
Did you know? The Pebble Cross is a memorial paying tribute to the priests deported during the French Revolution.

Geocaching is a fun and unusual outdoor activity that involves using a GPS or smartphone app to find "caches" (small containers) hidden in often beautiful and unexpected places. Charente-Maritime, with its varied landscapes, is an ideal playground.
Rather than just a hike, geocaching turns your outing into a veritable treasure hunt. Hundreds of caches are hidden throughout the department, from forests to seaside, including small villages and historical sites. It's a great way to discover hidden corners you would never have explored otherwise, while having fun with family or friends. Each cache found is a small victory and an opportunity to leave your mark in the logbook.
Nicknamed the "Lighthouse of Kings", the Cordouan Lighthouse awaits you off the coast of the department. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1862 (like Notre-Dame de Paris!) and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, it is the oldest lighthouse in France still in operation. It is also the only lighthouse at sea open to the public and still guarded.
Built in the open sea at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, this 16th-century architectural masterpiece stands majestically on its rocky islet. It boasts a unique silhouette and a rich history. A visit is an immersion in an exceptional maritime heritage. Each stone tells the story of centuries of navigation and human know-how.
What makes this visit so unusual is, above all, its accessibility. Reaching the Cordouan Lighthouse is not a simple formality. Boarding is from the port of Royan or Verdon-sur-Mer, but docking and access to the tower are only possible at low tide, creating a limited window of opportunity. Once the boat has docked, it is often necessary to finish the journey on foot on wet sand to reach the base of the lighthouse, reinforcing the feeling of an expedition. Climbing the 301 steps of this "king of lighthouses" culminates in a breathtaking panorama, with a 360° view of the Atlantic Ocean and the vastness of the Gironde estuary.
A favorite of the Gironde estuary, a getaway between land, river and ocean.
The Charente-Maritime Guide tested the La Sirène Cruises for sea trips to the Cordouan Lighthouse and in the Gironde estuary.
Oceana Lumina, the enchanted nighttime journey of the Arsenal des Mers in Rochefort, is a unique sensory immersion that takes on its full dimension at nightfall. As soon as the sun gives way to the stars, visitors are invited to a poetic stroll. Video projections, special effects, immersive sounds and lights create a magical atmosphere along historic monuments such as the Corderie Royale. Discover the great oceanic epics through a detailed narration. Between breathtaking moments and more contemplative sequences, everything takes place in a historical setting sublimated by the darkness.
This nighttime experience is particularly enjoyable in Charente-Maritime during warm summer evenings. Indeed, instead of enduring the heat of the day, visitors can enjoy the coolness of twilight and night for an outdoor activity. The stroll, which lasts about an hour.
Oceana Lumina thus becomes the ideal option to extend summer days in style with a touch of the unusual.
The activity is open to the public only during the months of July and August.
