    • THE WINE CELLAR OF THE GRAND CÔTE – SAINT-PIERRE-D'OLÉRON – ÎLE D'OLÉRON, NEAR THE PORT OF LA COTINIÈRE

A family vineyard rooted on the island of Oléron

Located north of the fishing port of La Cotinière, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, the Chai de la Grand Côte is steeped in a winemaking tradition passed down through generations. Today, this vineyard covers approximately 26 hectares in the heart of the Île d'Oléron, a region renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich soils. Its geographical location, between the Atlantic Ocean and farmland, directly influences the character of the wines produced on this estate, shaped by a temperate climate and natural conditions ideal for viticulture.

Grape varieties adapted to the Charente terroir

Originally, the vineyard was primarily planted with Ugni Blanc, a traditional grape variety used for distillation in the production of Cognac. Over the years, the grape varieties have diversified to meet broader production needs. Colombard for white wines, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc for red wines, have been added to the plots. This diversity allows for the production of Charentais regional wines, as well as Pineau des Charentes, closely linked to regional winemaking practices and the specific characteristics of the Île d'Oléron.

Pineau des Charentes, Cognac and country wines

The estate's first vintage of Pineau des Charentes, from the 2000 harvest, was bottled in 2002. Since then, the Chai de la Grand Côte has managed all stages of production: winemaking, aging, and bottling of Pineau des Charentes, Cognac, liqueurs, and Charentais regional wines. The work is carried out respecting traditional methods, with careful attention to aging times and the mastery of blending. Each product thus reflects the close link between the Charente terroir, the island climate, and local winemaking expertise.

A traditional wine cellar open to visitors

The estate welcomes visitors year-round at La Menounière, in a traditional winery located near La Cotinière. Visits offer the opportunity to discover the facilities, the production process, and the characteristics of the terroir. Tastings are offered in an authentic setting, directly connected to the winemaking process. As opening hours vary depending on the season, it is advisable to contact us before your visit. Group tours and guided tastings are also available by prior reservation.

      Presence in local markets

During the season, Chai de la Grand Côte also has stalls at the markets in La Cotinière and Saint-Denis-d'Oléron. This regular presence allows them to meet visitors and residents of the island of Oléron directly, and to showcase all of the estate's products in a friendly setting, typical of Oléron's markets.

What to discover within a 30km radius of the Chai de la Grand Côte

Within a 30 km radius of Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, the area offers numerous opportunities for exploration. Nature lovers can enjoy hiking through the national forests of Saint-Trojan-les-Bains or along the beaches of the west coast, renowned for their expansive ocean views. The salt marshes and typical channels of Île d'Oléron provide opportunities to observe diverse wildlife during walks or bike rides.

The villages of La Cotinière, Saint-Denis-d'Oléron, and Le Château-d'Oléron offer a glimpse into the local maritime and oyster-farming heritage, with their harbors, colorful huts, and markets. These local markets are also a chance to meet small producers : oysters, salt, honey, vegetables, and Charente specialties are widely available. Nearby, the towns of Rochefort and Marennes complete the exploration with their heritage sites, museums, and the banks of the Charente and Seudre rivers, perfect for leisurely boat trips.

Excellent white and red Pineau, and you must also try Sophie's Petit Blanc! Not to mention the fruit liqueurs, a real treat in cocktails. Le Chai de la Grand' Côte remains a must-visit on the island. Let's support our small local producers...🥂🍾 A pleasure.

A glass of their white wine served chilled, drunk in a restaurant with a plate of oysters, a great discovery. I asked the name of this wine, then I went to buy some from this winemaker, very friendly welcome from the owner. I recommend this place.
