  • English
    • Tonnay-Charente is a French commune located in Charente-Maritime, near Rochefort. Historically, it was a port city of great importance, and today it retains a rich heritage linked to its maritime and commercial past.

      A Historic Port of Saintonge

From the 12th century, Tonnay-Charente established itself as the main port of Saintonge and one of the busiest on the Charente coast, even rivaling La Rochelle. Its strategic position, a link between the Saintonge hinterland and the Atlantic Ocean via the Charente River, has allowed it to enjoy constant prosperity over the centuries.

In the 18th century, Tonnay-Charente was notably the official port for exporting Cognac eaux-de-vie to the world. Up to 150 barges could be seen there every day, laden with barrels of this precious spirit, as well as cut stone and grain. This flourishing commercial activity had a profound impact on the town's identity and urban planning. Even today, the commercial port of Tonnay-Charente remains active, welcoming cargo ships from all over the world.

      Heritage and Attractions

Tonnay-Charente offers visitors a wealth of heritage that bears witness to its glorious past:

      • A walk along the restored quays allows you to imagine the bustle of yesteryear and admire the facades of old offices and trading houses, such as the famous Maison Girard. Sailing boats and barges continue to liven up the river, making Tonnay-Charente a pleasant river stopover.
      • The Suspension Bridge is arguably the city's most iconic landmark. Built by engineer Arnodin (the same engineer as the Rochefort Transporter Bridge) in the early 20th century, this historic road bridge also has a turbulent history, having been saved from destruction during World War II. Although the passage of cars has been prohibited since 1964, it is a major visual landmark and a lookout point over the Charente River.
      • Saint-Étienne Church: Located on Place Jean Moulin, this church has interesting architectural elements, including a tabernacle from the end of the 17th century, listed as a Historic Monument, which comes from the Capuchin chapel and was offered by Louis XIV.
      • While strolling through the historic center, you can discover the remains of the ramparts of the old castle, beautiful houses with colorful shutters, old wine cellars, fountains, a wash house and the renovated market halls, which have become a cultural space hosting concerts and exhibitions.

      Geographical Position and Current Dynamism

Tonnay-Charente is today a commune forming part of the urban unit of Rochefort, acting as a "satellite town" of the latter. It remains an attractive residential centre thanks to its diverse living environment and its privileged geographical location on the Charente. Its commercial port, although less central to the local economy than it was, retains significant activity managed by the Chamber of Commerce and is twinned with that of Rochefort, with nearly 900,000 tonnes of goods passing through annually.
