Along the Atlantic coast from Brittany to Spain, there are many customs officers trails… It is an ancestral tradition for customs officers to survey the coast to watch the arrival of ships and surprise a few smugglers , trying to avoid paying import taxes. In this case, the Sentier des Douaniers en Charente Maritime is a long way, along the coast from Royan to La Rochelle . It takes several names depending on the towns it crosses. You will also find it under the name of “Sentier du littoral”. It is also a secondary route of the Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
Perched on the cliffs or at the top of the dunes, you will admire exceptional panoramas over La Rochelle, the beaches and the coastal forests. It is dotted with lighthouses and squares , typical of the Charente maritime heritage.
