  • English
    • Housing the remains of an old fortified castle, Taillebourg, a small town of 600 souls is known for its battle of 1242, opposing the king of France Saint-Louis to Henry III king of England, painted on a famous painting by Eugène Delacroix . The castle park offers a breathtaking view of the Charente and its valley.

The idea of the Guide de Charente Maritime:
Go up to the park overlooking the roofs of the village and the Charente valley, especially at the end of the afternoon to admire a soft light.

A few kilometers from Taillebourg, you can visit the Castle which inspired Charles Perrault. It is said that the latter took as a model the castle of Crazannes, property of the Count of Caravaz, for the famous tale of Puss in Boots and the famous Count of Carabas.

Crazannes is a “nature hub” as famous for its cut stone as for its quarries which are now disused and which can be visited in season. Do not hesitate to venture out, while being very careful on the path crossing the quarries, the spectacle of these abysses created by man and today invaded by vegetation made of intertwined lianas is astonishing. This place invites you to discover an astonishing universe in the very heart of Charente Maritime, west of Saintes. Crazannes stone, an amber white, was used in particular for the construction of the now legendary Fort Boyard and the Arch of Germanicus in Saintes. Pretty modern sculptures at the entrance to the site and in the village of Crazannes itself testify to the good use that can be made of this material.
