    • LES BASSES AMARRES – MORNAC-SUR-SEUDRE – CHARENTE-MARITIME – NEAR THE MARENNES-OLÉRON BASIN

A discreet address in the heart of the oyster marshes

Located in Mornac-sur-Seudre, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, the restaurant Les Basses Amarres is located in a natural setting typical of the Marennes-Oléron basin, between oyster channels, salt marshes and flowery alleys. This peaceful place offers an environment conducive to a culinary break focused on local products and market cuisine.

In a room with a sober and warm atmosphere, or on the terrace bordered by greenery in fine weather, guests discover a short menu, renewed with the seasons. The chef, Franck Berthier, offers a cuisine that highlights the Charente terroir, drawing on his international experience.

Local cuisine inspired by the Charente region

Trained in major establishments in Switzerland, England and Africa , Franck Berthier worked for a long time at the Royal Plaza in Montreux, a five-star hotel on the Vaud Riviera. Eager to rediscover a direct link with the products, he chose to settle in Mornac-sur-Seudre to open an establishment on a human scale. His choice naturally fell on a cuisine highlighting seafood, seasonal vegetables and local producers.

The oysters come from Jérôme Miet, an oyster farmer and refiner located just across the street from the restaurant. The fish are chosen every morning from the small surrounding ports. As for the herbs, fruits and condiments, they come mainly from market gardeners and artisans in the region. The menu changes regularly, depending on the arrivals and the chef's inspiration.

A discreet table known for its consistency

Without unnecessary stylistic effects, Les Basses Amarres attracts a loyal and discreet clientele. The establishment appears in several national gastronomic guides, including the Michelin Guide, Le Petit Futé and TripAdvisor, where it is often praised for the consistency of its cuisine, the quality of the service and the warm welcome. The setting, without ostentation, invites a serene experience, respecting the product and the season.

A culinary experience between land and sea

The menu offers a narrow selection of starters, main courses and desserts, sometimes punctuated by a tasting menu on weekday evenings or by reservation. The cooking is precise, the seasonings just right. The plates, elegant without being sophisticated, echo the philosophy of the place: fresh, sincere and seasonal cuisine, serving local biodiversity.

Discoveries within a 30 km radius of Mornac-sur-Seudre

The location of Mornac-sur-Seudre allows for many discoveries within a short radius. Oyster-farming villages such as La Tremblade, Arvert or Chaillevette offer authentic stops, between farmers' huts, open-air markets and walks along the Seudre. The port of La Grève invites you to take a stroll along the water, with a view of the oyster beds and the old locks.

Hiking enthusiasts can follow the Arts Trail or take the Customs Path between Bourcefranc and La Tremblade, offering panoramic views of oyster beds and migratory birds. A 30-minute drive away, the town of Royan offers family beaches, remarkable modernist architecture and a renowned covered market.

Inland, Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan and Breuillet reveal a well-preserved rural heritage, while the forests of La Coubre offer ideal shaded breathing space in summer. Finally, producers of Pineau, honey or sea salt are happy to welcome visitors for a tasting or a guided tour of their business.

Thus, Les Basses Amarres is part of a region rich in know-how, ideal for a getaway between gastronomy, nature and local culture.

A generous, innovative kitchen. A very appealing starter palette. A bit of effort on the decor could make this place truly enjoyable.

We were looking forward to spending a friendly time with excellent food. Very warm welcome, nice setting. On the other hand, the squid was far too dry and the veal, the side dish, the potatoes too dry, the dessert was impeccable too, we expected better.
