Mornac-sur-Seudre, an invitation to travel along the banks of the estuary

Mornac-sur-Seudre
Mornac-sur-Seudre, an ...

Ah, cabins! This simple word is enough to transport you. The mere mention of these small, multi-colored wooden shacks characteristic of the Charente coast takes our imagination on a journey and leads us to bucolic places : strips of land surrounded by an immensity of water, salt marshes and oyster beds. Head to Mornac-sur-Seudre, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” located on the banks of the Seudre in the Royannais region, on the edge of the Arvert peninsula. Art lovers, solitary strollers, family walkers or visitors looking for escape, everyone will find something to suit them in this small oyster port with its cinematic charm!

One of the five “Most Beautiful Villages of France” in Charente-Maritime

Oysters, salt, hollyhocks... The Charente trinity is perfectly respected in Mornac-sur-Seudre. Time seems to have no hold on this medieval village with its narrow cobbled streets, lined with traditional whitewashed houses, surrounded by salt marshes and mudflats bordered by the Seudre, one of the smallest rivers in France. A true gem in the heart of a natural setting!

With magnificent arguments, Mornac-sur-Seudre has entered the very exclusive club of the " Most Beautiful Villages of France ". As you stroll through the largely pedestrianized village, you will quickly understand why by discovering its radiant architecture, the Place du Port, its built heritage, its craftsmen's stalls or its artists' studios...

To soak up the atmosphere of this village with its strong character and to preserve the authenticity of the historic center, cars are kept outside. Take the time to explore the village on foot and let yourself be won over by the relaxed atmosphere that reigns there. Beautiful surprises await you around the alleys lined with hollyhocks!

Starting from the old main gate of the city, in the rue des Halles, the Charente-Maritime Guide ventures out with his nose in the wind and his mood wandering to discover the village.

Once a prosperous fishing and trading port, Mornac retains some medieval vestiges of its rich past, such as its sumptuous timber-framed market halls supported by stone pillars dating from the Middle Ages. Preserved, the Mornac Market Halls were a renowned fairground where traders could sell fish and salt in exchange for a fee paid to the Lord. Today, they house the village market, which is held on Wednesday and Sunday mornings, as well as Thursday evenings (from April 1st to November 1st).

Passing the Halles, we take the rue du Port, one of the main pedestrian routes to reach the small fishing port closely linked to oyster farming. Punctuated by craft workshops, restaurants and cafés, this street constitutes the nerve center of the village. Here, the heritage can be visited in complete freedom: by collecting its roots around the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre built from the 10th century on the site of an ancient Merovingian sanctuary, and by meeting the artists who bring the village to life.

In the early 1950s, Mornac experienced a new lease of life thanks to its arts and crafts sector. Pottery, weaving, painting, stained glass, carved wood… Today, around forty artists have taken up residence there, inspired by the serenity of the place. In the “Atelier Français ”, we meet the designer Sara Bartko hard at work making jewelry and decorative objects in her workshop. A meticulous and passionate work that is imbued with the natural elements collected by the artist during her walks. As we pass through the art galleries and discover the various talents of the artisans, we push open the door to the Bar Ouf for a well-deserved refreshment. The interior courtyard shaded by climbing vines, the vintage style and the delicious artisanal ice creams make it a very pleasant stop!

The picturesque port and the Mornac channel

As you will have understood, Rue du Port inevitably leads... to the Port ! This lively place in the village lives to the rhythm of the tides. The coming and going of oyster boats and pleasure craft offers a relaxing ballet to the sound of the lapping water. The second oyster port in the Seudre estuary, its channel is lined with multi-colored wooden huts, ideal for tasting some oysters and deepening your knowledge of the region!

Embark aboard the Aigrette for a trip from Mornac to l'Eguille and explore the meanders of the Seudre and its small ports nestled between the marshes and the Hauts de Seudre. A setting conducive to contemplation ! Follow the channel on the Route de la Seudre to enjoy the superb wild landscapes or a gourmet break with a touch of sea air on one of the terraces of the cabins with oysters, shellfish or mussel eclade, a Charente specialty, on the menu.

Mornac is an integral part of the Marennes-Oléron oyster basin and is home to numerous oyster beds and refining basins where the precious seafood acquires a very particular color and flavor under the action of marennine. This green pigment produced by a microscopic algae which gives the reputation of fines de claires oysters.

Don't forget to try, like us, the mouclade / mussel eclade or the Charentaise oyster during your stay in Charente-Maritime!

On the other side of the bank, don't miss the Mornac "Phare", an authentic replica of one of the very first lighthouses, which were then only wooden fires on a "tilting fire holder" manually activated.

Don't hesitate to push open the door of the " Casino de Mornac" in the yellow cabin for an unusual encounter with the "Captain"! This emblematic character of Mornac embodies the conviviality that has reigned in the village for decades. Apart from an otherworldly bric-a-brac made up of all kinds of antique objects, this cabin is the real HQ of the Mornacois and Mornacoises who came to play cards while sipping an aperitif after work until late into the night. The warm soul of Mornac and Charente hospitality in all its splendor.
