Heading towards L'Houmeau, near La Rochelle

L'Houmeau, a seaside town, is one of the smallest municipalities in the La Rochelle metropolitan area. With a 3-kilometer coastline and a small pebble beach overlooked by cliffs, L'Houmeau enjoys an exceptional location between La Rochelle and the Île de Ré. The coastal path offers breathtaking views of the ocean and the majestic curve of the Île de Ré bridge.

The wooden footbridge
The wooden footbridge

The charm of L'Houmeau undeniably lies in the small Port du Plomb, which connects to the neighboring town of Nieul-sur-Mer via a wooden footbridge. There are two ways to get there:

  1. Via Nieul-sur-Mer, cross the shellfish farming hamlet of Lauzières and its former salt marshes now used for refining oysters.
  2. Another option is to go through L'Houmeau and follow the coastline to the parking area where you can leave your car and continue on foot towards the port. At any time of day, hikers, cyclists, and joggers share this safe path that runs along the ocean. The view is breathtaking, overlooking the Pertuis Breton strait between the Île de Ré and the Bay of Aiguillon, opening onto the Vendée region and Brittany on the horizon.

In this typical port nestled in a natural harbor, one almost expects to see barrels of salt and wine unloaded, but today, merchant ships have given way to pleasure craft. The port of Le Plomb appears on navigators' maps in the 12th century. Historically, it handled significant traffic with the Île de Ré, fueling active trade with Paris and the northern countries. The archives even reveal an ordinance of July 16, 1608, which established the "rights to be levied"—or taxes to be collected—on chickens, calves, wine, and salt. Today, this port continues its tradition of artisanal fishing and oyster farming.

In this charming little harbor, perfect for leisurely strolls, everything invites you to slow down. At anchor, oyster farmers' boats lie alongside elegant sailboats … You'll enjoy wandering around, crossing the footbridge to the lighthouse, watching the boats come and go, and soaking up the relaxed pace of life that reigns here year-round. A truly photogenic natural setting. From the footbridge, the view is breathtaking, overlooking the very chic Île de Ré, just across the strait. It's barely a ten-minute boat ride from L'Houmeau.
