In July 2026, the Charente-Maritime Guide was invited to several concerts during the summer edition. From the moment we arrived in the city, the air already vibrated with a contagious energy, promising an unforgettable evening.

What are the Francofolies?

Created in 1985, Les Francofolies de La Rochelle have become over the decades an unmissable event on the music scene.

Its main mission is clear and essential: to promote and disseminate contemporary song and music. This festival is distinguished by its unique characteristic of being both a springboard for emerging young talents and a prestigious stage for established artists, thus anchoring its history deeply in the French musical landscape.

Every year in July, the entire city pulsates to the rhythm of concerts held in iconic venues such as the Scène Jean-Louis Foulquier (the main stage), the Grand Théâtre, La Coursive, and the Théâtre Verdière. The spirit of the Francofolies is above all one of conviviality, eclecticism, and discovery, aiming to provide festival-goers with a unique experience.

To fully enjoy the Francofolies festival, good preparation is essential. Here are some practical tips to help you plan your visit.

How to come ?

La Rochelle is well served by train (direct TGV from Paris) and by road. During the festival, it is strongly recommended to use public transport once there (buses, self-service bicycles) or to walk, as the city centre is pedestrianized.

Where to park?

If you're coming by car, parking can be a challenge during the festival. Park -and-ride facilities are usually set up on the outskirts of the city, with shuttle buses to the center. It's advisable to arrive early or use the paid underground car parks in the city center, although these are often full. Consider reserving your space if possible.

Where to stay?

La Rochelle offers a wide range of accommodation options : hotels, campsites, vacation rentals, and bed and breakfasts. However, once again, demand is extremely high during the Francofolies festival. It is essential to book your accommodation several months in advance to have a good selection and reasonable prices. The surrounding towns can also be an option, provided you plan your transportation.

Where is it taking place?

The heart of the festival beats in the Old Port of La Rochelle, with the Jean-Louis Foulquier stage as its central hub, set up in the Saint-Jean d'Acre parking lot (or Vieux Port Ouest). Many other concerts take place in iconic venues throughout the city (Grand Théâtre, La Coursive, Théâtre Verdière, etc.). Consult the official program for the specific locations of each performance.

What time should I arrive?

For open-air concerts on the Main Stage, arriving in the early evening (or even late afternoon for headliners) is recommended to find a good spot and enjoy the pre-concert atmosphere. It also depends on whether you have a seat in the pit or in the stands.
For indoor concerts, access is often smoother, but it is always best to arrive a little early to avoid the crowds.

Where to eat?

La Rochelle boasts a wide variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, particularly around the Old Port and in the surrounding streets. During the festival, numerous food stalls are also set up at the concert venues, offering sandwiches, local dishes, and drinks. Consider making a reservation if you plan to dine at a popular restaurant. You can also bring your own picnic, but be sure to note any food restrictions imposed by the festival.

Our arrival in La Rochelle

Upon arriving in La Rochelle, the city has already been buzzing for several days: the Francofolies festival is being prepared over a month to set up the Main Stage.

Our first stop naturally leads us to the Tourist Office, where, in addition to practical information, exhibitions dedicated to the history of the festival and its leading artists are already attracting curious visitors.

Strolling through the cobblestone streets, the spectacle is everywhere. The majestic Ferris wheel dominates the skyline, its gondolas slowly rising, offering breathtaking views of the city and the port. Everywhere, ice cream parlors are packed, as are the restaurant terraces.

Near the iconic Grosse Horloge (Big Clock), a charming local craft market has sprung up. It's also where you can glimpse the more intimate backstage areas of the festival: radio crews are conducting interviews with artists before they go on stage. We even run into Léman, in the middle of a Q&A session with Radio Alouette.

Along the port, festival-goers form a gigantic queue near the famous towers of La Rochelle.

We walk to the Lantern Tower. It's here, at the rear of the Mint, in the VIP area, that we pick up our wristbands to enter the evening's festivities. But perhaps the real spectacle lies there, spontaneous and vibrant: these groups of fans patiently awaiting the arrival of their favorite artists, their eyes shining with the hope of an autograph or a photo.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT LA COURSIVE: THE PROMISE OF A NEW GENERATION

Even before the Main Stage comes alive, head to La Coursive, where the afternoon is reserved for emerging artists in a more intimate setting. Far from the pit and the heat of the Old Port, the atmosphere is different: closer, more subdued, but just as intense.

Hina kicked things off with a French-Moroccan rap accompanied by a simple guitar and vocals, with a synth in the background. The show was intimate, the artist still relatively unknown to the general public, but in the audience, some festival-goers already knew every word by heart: they had come especially for him. Then it was Léman 's turn, the headliner of the afternoon. Discovered on The Voice, he delivered a real show, condensed for the Théâtre Verdière stage, but with the same energy as on a larger stage: accompanied by a pianist and a drummer, he alternated between singing and guitar solos, constantly interacting with the audience. A concert that definitely made us want to see him again someday on a bigger stage.

After his concert, we were able to exchange a few words with the artist.

Behind the main stage, there is a whole world

We enter a new dimension and find ourselves near the main stage of the Francofolies festival. After passing through festival security, we enter an unexpected world, a microcosm where the festival's excitement takes on a whole new dimension. Accessing the backstage area of the Francofolies is like discovering a haven of peace and teeming activity.

At the heart of the VIP village, the Patio stands out as the prime meeting point. It's where you'll find artists, producers, partners, and special guests. Everyone gathers in an atmosphere that's both relaxed and focused. Several restaurants from La Rochelle have set up pop-up stalls, offering refined local cuisine : pizzas, seafood, artisanal ice cream... Feeling thirsty? The bar is open until closing time. In a quiet corner, a photo booth awaits festival-goers to capture the moment.

One of the village's true gems is undoubtedly its terrace, offering breathtaking ocean views. It's a magical place where you can escape the hustle and bustle for a moment, admire the sunset over the Atlantic, and perhaps even hear the distant echoes of live music. An ideal setting for conversation, relaxation, or simply savoring the moment.

A little further on, the press area is buzzing with activity. Journalists, photographers, and television crews are busy conducting interviews with the day's artists. This is the beating heart of the festival's information, where every word, every image is captured to be shared with the outside world.

Finally, we access the viewing platforms using our wristbands. They are located directly above the stage and the pit, high up, offering a bird's-eye view of the performers. Even higher are the VIP boxes reserved for VIP partners, exclusive spaces where canapés and champagne are served.

Behind the scenes, there is a whole world working to create the magic of the Francofolies.

The festival village

This is where the spirit of the festival comes to life, long before the first notes resonate on the main stage.

As soon as the gates opened, the village filled with a joyful crowd. The atmosphere was one of simplicity and sharing. Smiles were everywhere, conversations flowed easily between strangers, and a feeling of musical fraternity united everyone.

It's a veritable festive ecosystem. Numerous fast-food stands offer a multitude of flavors to satisfy every craving: potatoes from Île de Ré, sandwiches, local specialties to take away... Long lines form outside the refreshment stands, where people can cool off in a cheerful atmosphere. But the village isn't just about food and drink: festival merchandise stands display t-shirts and souvenirs, while associations and partners offer entertainment and information.

The collective energy is palpable. Laughter erupts, bursts of joy fill the air, and the first songs begin to be sung a cappella by eager groups. It's in this village that the magic truly happens, the magic of a fleeting community united by a love of music and a desire to celebrate. People are already dancing, singing, and fully experiencing the Francofolies festival, even before the headliners take the stage.

Friday evening, Main Stage: kick-off despite the heatwave

Luiza kicked off the festivities. It wasn't easy being the very first artist to take the stage to launch this year's Francofolies festival, but she rose to the challenge brilliantly, bringing sunshine and joy despite the sweltering heat. Her music, fresh and simple, exuded happiness and the feeling of summer.

Next up was Youssou N'Dour. Earlier, we had the chance to watch his afternoon rehearsals. A welcome glimpse, which revealed a relaxed and approachable artist behind the scenes.

Zaz then takes over with infectious energy, performing her hit songs to get the crowd singing along, chorus after chorus.

The evening ended with Gims, the day's headliner. A large number of festival-goers had come just for him, despite the heat. Drawing from both his solo tracks and the Sexion d'Assaut repertoire, he managed to bring together all generations and create an electric atmosphere. The show flew by, hit after hit, and then it was over. A great way to conclude this first evening.

These performances, featuring both headliners and emerging artists, created a mosaic of emotions, making this evening an unforgettable musical journey. We leave with stars in our eyes and memories to cherish.

Saturday afternoon at La Coursive: the TeddyBear revelation

Return to La Coursive the next day to discover TeddyBear, a Belgian artist still little known to the general public but already unanimously awarded the Francofolies Le Club Prize thanks to his remarkable appearance at the Chantier des Francofolies.

On stage, he displays incredible energy, drawing on influences from Brel and Stromae, wielding words with rare skill. He tackles far from trivial subjects: his parents' divorce, fatphobia, his place in the world, not to mention his famous pink shoes, which have become his signature.

At the end of the concert, a standing ovation : the audience demanded an encore, which the artist would gladly have given had he had more of his own songs to perform. One thing is certain: we'll see him again!

Monday evening, Main Stage: the next generation of women

Back to the Old Port for the penultimate Francofolies of La Rochelle, where women are the stars of the evening.

In the early afternoon, we had the chance to attend Marguerite 's rehearsals, which held a lovely surprise for us that evening. A Star Academy alumna, she brings a breath of fresh air to contemporary music with her own unique style. Attentive to her audience, she doesn't hesitate to interrupt her concert as soon as she notices any discomfort in the crowd. On stage, she invited Helena to join her in singing her song " Belle vie "—a surprise for the audience, which we had the pleasure of knowing about beforehand thanks to the rehearsals.

It was Helena, a Belgian artist, who took over. Like Marguerite, she had participated in Star Academy, but a season earlier, alongside Pierre Garnier, Julien Lieb, and Lénie. On stage, her powerful lyrics resonated deeply, alternating between covers of well-known songs and more understated tracks from her album. Her artistic direction was particularly striking, with dancers and choreography that were easy to remember, both for the audience and for the lyrics. Many little girls, dressed in Helena t-shirts, sang her hits at the top of their lungs. The intergenerational connection was a joy to witness!

Louane surprised everyone by arriving unannounced in the pit, where she launched into her first song amidst the crowd before taking to the stage. A true all-rounder, she effortlessly switched between guitar and synthesizer, performing older hits before treating us to a brand new, unreleased track. Finally, she invited her best friend on stage for a duet. A whirlwind of energy from start to finish.

The evening ended with Aya Nakamura, the most anticipated artist of the night. Long before she even took the stage, the crowd was already going wild, phones in hand, ready to capture every moment of the star of her generation. She performed her iconic hits, along with her latest radio hits. We left with her catchy tunes stuck in our heads, ready to come back for the next edition!
