La Rochelle City Hall is an iconic building, considered the oldest French city hall still in operation. It is an architectural testament to the city's history and power over the centuries.
Architecture and history
The building is a fascinating mixture of styles, mainly late 15th-century Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance. The surrounding wall gives it the appearance of a fortified castle, with its crenellated patrol path, machicolations and belfry tower.
The main building, in the inner courtyard, was built at various times, including an elegant 16th-century Renaissance pavilion. The main façade, with its baldachin and lantern, was erected under Henry IV, whose statue stands in the square. The architect Juste Lisch also contributed to its restoration and restructuring in the 19th century. The Town Hall was listed as a Historic Monument in 1861.
Fire and reconstruction
On June 28, 2013, a violent fire ravaged a large part of the building, destroying in particular the framework of the village hall and part of the Renaissance wing. Fortunately, thanks to the rapid intervention of the firefighters, many works of art and precious elements were saved from the flames. The reconstruction work, led by the chief architect of historical monuments Philippe Villeneuve, lasted several years and aimed to restore the building to its original state, while incorporating modernizations to make it more functional and comfortable. The Town Hall reopened its doors in December 2019, regaining its former splendor.
Interior and visits
The interior of the Town Hall contains treasures, including the famous Cabinet of Jean Guiton, an emblematic figure of the resistance of La Rochelle during the Great Siege of 1628. This cabinet houses Aubusson and Flemish tapestries, as well as the legendary marble table on which Jean Guiton is said to have struck his dagger, declaring that he would pierce the heart of anyone who spoke of surrender. The Aldermen's Hall, remodeled in the 19th century, is now the meeting room of the Town Council.
