    • Saint-Denis-d'Oléron is a charming town located at the northern tip of the island of Oléron. It is a popular destination for its mix of authenticity, varied landscapes and water activities.

The Chassiron Lighthouse: Emblem of the "End of the World"

The most iconic attraction of Saint-Denis-d'Oléron is undoubtedly the Chassiron Lighthouse. Majestically standing at the northern tip of the island, often nicknamed the "end of the world" of Oléron, this black and white lighthouse is an unmissable landmark. From its height of 46 meters , after climbing its 224 steps, visitors are rewarded with an unforgettable panorama. The view takes in the Pertuis d'Antioche, the Ile de Ré, the Ile d'Aix, Fort Boyard, and even the La Rochelle coast on a clear day. Around the lighthouse, landscaped gardens invite you to take a stroll.

A Vibrant Marina and Diverse Beaches

Saint-Denis-d'Oléron is proud to have the largest marina on the Île d'Oléron, with more than 700 moorings. This port is a real heart of life, where you can stroll, admire the comings and goings of the boats, or even embark on cruises to Fort Boyard, the Île d'Aix or La Rochelle, as well as sea fishing trips.

The town also offers a wide variety of beaches:

      • La Boirie Beach : located to the east, it is very popular with families thanks to its sheltered waters and its famous multi-colored bathing cabins, charming vestiges of the era of the first sea bathing in the 19th century. It is also accessible to people with reduced mobility.
      • La Plage des Huttes : On the west coast, this fine sandy beach stretches for over 5 km. It is particularly renowned for water sports such as surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, offering a wilder setting conducive to thrills. Swimming is supervised in July and August.

      Heritage Wealth and Outdoor Activities

Beyond its lighthouses and beaches, Saint-Denis-d'Oléron boasts a rich heritage:

      • Visitors can explore its old quarters with their low, traditionally whitewashed houses and colorful shutters, winding through winding alleys. The Saint-Denis church, with its 12th-century Saintonge Romanesque portal, is well worth a visit.
      • The Fish Locks are ancient stone structures, visible at low tide. They bear witness to the island's traditional fishing techniques.
      • Remains of windmills and numerous public wells, characteristic elements of the Oléron habitat of yesteryear, punctuate the landscapes.

For lovers of outdoor activities, Saint-Denis-d'Oléron is a true paradise:

      • A vast network of cycle paths and footpaths allows you to explore the diversity of landscapes, from dunes to forests, from marshes to vineyards.
      • Besides surfing at Les Huttes, sailing, kayaking and diving are popular activities.
      • A geocaching trail is also available for a fun discovery of heritage.

      Gastronomy and Local Culture

The culinary richness of the region is in the spotlight in Saint-Denis-d'Oléron, with a predominance of seafood: oysters, mussels, but also the island's famous potatoes, local wine and cognac. Markets enliven the town, offering the opportunity to taste the flavors of Oléron.
