    • The Tour de la Chaîne, like its neighbors the Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Lanterne, is inseparable from the Old Port of La Rochelle.

Built from 1375, it is the most recent tower in the port entrance defense system, just after the Saint-Nicolas Tower. Its name comes from the large chain that was originally stretched every night or in case of danger between it and the Saint-Nicolas Tower, to close the port and prevent access to enemy ships. This chain was operated by a system of capstans housed in the tower.

Historically, the Tour de la Chaîne was also the residence of the harbor master. It was from here that the coming and going of ships was controlled and port taxes were collected. It played a crucial role during the Great Siege of La Rochelle (1627-1628) and was badly damaged during the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, becoming a powder magazine before being restored. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1879.

      Architecture and Functions

The Chain Tower is a fine example of medieval military architecture.

      • It is cylindrical in shape, truncated on the side facing the Saint-Nicolas Tower (to facilitate the attachment of the chain). Built in limestone , it has thick and robust walls, typical of the fortifications of the time.
      • The interior is composed of several superimposed rooms. On the ground floor was the machinery for hoisting the chain. The upper floors served as accommodation for the harbor master and as surveillance areas. Patrol paths and machicolations provided defense.
      • Beyond its role as a "chain guard," the tower also had a customs function . Entry and exit duties on goods were collected there. Its strategic position, opposite the Saint-Nicolas Tower, made it a key element in locking down the port.

      Visit and Tourist Interest

Today, the Tour de la Chaîne is open to the public and managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.

Inside, permanent and temporary exhibitions allow visitors to discover the history of the Tower, its defensive role, and the history of La Rochelle as a trading port and departure point for the New World. There are models , historical documents , and objects.

From the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Old Port, the Saint-Nicolas Tower, the Lantern Tower, the streets of the old town and the bay of La Rochelle, offering magnificent perspectives of the ocean and the surrounding islands (Ré, Oléron, Aix).

The Tour de la Chaîne is a must-see for anyone visiting La Rochelle, offering a fascinating insight into the medieval and maritime past of this historic city. It symbolizes the wealth and power of La Rochelle throughout the centuries.
