    • The Old Port of La Rochelle is the historic and emblematic heart of the city, a place steeped in history, charm and a unique atmosphere that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

      A Glorious Maritime Past

The history of the Old Port of La Rochelle is deeply rooted in that of France. From the 13th century, this location was used as a port, and it is likely that it was quickly fortified. La Rochelle became an important Atlantic Templar port between the 12th and 14th centuries.

During the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), and then with the discovery and exploration of America from the 15th century, the Old Port played a major role, making La Rochelle one of the leading ports in France. It was also a central player in the slave trade and the triangular trade, as well as an important crossroads for the trade of cereals, Charente wines and salt.

Over the centuries, the port has evolved: the current floating dock was built from 1778 and put into service in 1808. Until 1994, it was still occupied by a flotilla of fishing boats, before their move to the new Chef de Baie fishing port.

      Iconic Towers and Unique Architecture

The most recognizable image of the Old Port is undoubtedly that of its three medieval towers, classified as Historic Monuments since 1879, which watch over the entrance to the harbor:

      • Saint-Nicolas Tower: An impressive fortified keep, it measures approximately 38 meters high and has a slightly pentagonal base.
      • The Chain Tower: Located opposite the Saint-Nicolas Tower, it was once used to stretch a chain across the entrance to the port to protect it from intrusions or to regulate traffic.
      • The Lantern Tower (or Four Sergeants' Tower): Further away, this is the tallest (55 meters), identifiable by its Gothic spire. It served as a lighthouse and a prison, and its walls still bear the engravings left by former prisoners.

These towers survived the destruction of the city walls after the siege of 1628, testifying to the strategic importance of La Rochelle.

Beyond the towers, the surrounding architecture of the Old Port and the historic center is remarkable. The city is nicknamed the "White City" because of its Crazannes limestone facades, which take on a golden hue at sunset. The cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and mansions create a charming and timeless atmosphere. The Grosse Horloge, the former city gate dating from the 14th century, marks the transition between the port and the old town.

The Old Port Today: Pleasure Craft and Tourist Vitality

Today, the Vieux Port of La Rochelle has become a vibrant marina, offering around 320 mooring places. It is part of the wider network of the Port de Plaisance de La Rochelle, which also includes the Port des Minimes and the Bassin des Chalutiers, totalling over 5,000 places.

The Old Port is the beating heart of life in La Rochelle, a popular place for strolling where boaters, fishermen and tourists mingle. The quays are full of restaurants, bars and shops, creating a lively atmosphere at all hours of the day. It is also the starting point for many sea excursions to the Ile de Ré, the Ile d'Oléron, the Ile d'Aix or Fort Boyard.

Beyond its tourist role, it maintains a port activity with basins accessible via locks, whose opening hours are adapted to the tides (the Bassin des Tralutiers and the Bassin des Yachts).
