Phare du quai du Gabut Lighthouses in La Rochelle

The Phare du quai du Gabut, also known as the "red lighthouse", is an iconic structure in La Rochelle, guiding ships towards the Old Port. Built in 1852 and initially equipped with a fixed red light, it has evolved over time: electrified in 1936, its light changed and its height increased to 23 meters in 1963. Today, with its bright red color and distinctive bands, it operates in tandem with the Phare du quai Valin (the "green lighthouse") as an alignment lighthouse, essential for the safety of navigation in the port entrance channel. It has been listed as a historic monument since 2011.

Although the lighthouse itself is not open to visitors, it remains a must-see landmark for visitors and locals alike. Located at the foot of the Saint-Nicolas Tower, it contributes to the charm of the lively Gabut district, known for its colorful houses and friendly terraces.
