    • The Grosse Horloge, as we know it today, is the result of a long evolution. Originally, it was one of the fortified gates of the medieval city.

      History

In the 12th century, it was the " Porte du Perrot ", one of the main gates of the first city wall of La Rochelle, providing direct access to the port. It was part of the city's defensive system.

As early as the 14th century (around 1300), a clock was installed on the gate, giving it its current name. It was a crucial element in the life of the city, marking the rhythm of port and urban activities.

In the 18th century, the medieval gate was extensively remodeled and rebuilt in a more classical style. The lower passage was vaulted, and the medieval arch was replaced by a basket-handle arch. It was at this time that it took on its current, wider and more decorative appearance. It was then topped by a campanile, which was replaced by the current polygonal dome and its bell.

The Grosse Horloge was classified as a Historic Monument in 1928, thus recognizing its heritage and historical value.

      Architecture and Symbolism

The Grosse Horloge today appears as a classical triumphal arch, although its original function was defensive.

It is composed of a large stone arch, under which passes the street, connecting the Old Port to the rue du Palais, one of the historic arteries of La Rochelle.

Above the arch rises a rectangular building which houses the clock mechanism. This part is surmounted by a polygonal stone dome decorated with skylights and topped with an openwork lantern which houses the bell.

The clock faces are visible from both sides of the monument (city and harbor), allowing everyone to read the time. The mechanism itself is ancient and has undergone restoration.

Beyond its practical function, the Grosse Horloge symbolizes the transition between the maritime world of the Vieux Port and the bustle of the historic city center. It is an essential landmark for locals and visitors alike. It is also one of the most photographed places in La Rochelle.
