    • The Abbey of Notre-Dame-de-Ré, better known as the Abbey of Châteliers, is a major historical site in the commune of La Flotte-en-Ré. Today in ruins, it nonetheless remains a fascinating testimony to the Cistercian and medieval history of the island.

      A Tormented and Resilient History

The Châteliers Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century (between 1156 and 1179) by monks from the Abbey of l'Étoile. It played a crucial role in the economic development of the Île de Ré, notably through the introduction and expansion of vine cultivation and salt marshes.

However, its history has been marked by many trials. The abbey was burned and pillaged several times, notably by the English in 1294, and again in 1462. It also suffered the ravages of the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, which marked the beginning of its definitive decline. In the 17th century, some of its stones were even reused for the construction of the nearby Fort de la Prée.

Despite this destruction, some remains have survived. The high western gable of the abbey church has been preserved because it served as a landmark (a navigational landmark) for sailors, having been painted black and white for this purpose.

The entire ruins were classified as Historic Monuments on May 21, 1990, thus ensuring their protection and the possibility of restoration work, such as that carried out in 1997 and more recently, a phase of which was inaugurated in January 2022 thanks, among other things, to donations from the Heritage Foundation.

The Architecture of the Ruins and What Remains to Be Seen

The remains of the Abbey of Châteliers, although partially in ruins, offer a poignant glimpse of its former splendor and of Cistercian architecture characterized by its simplicity and elegance.

The best-preserved elements are the majestic remains of the nave and the western facade of the former Notre-Dame abbey church, in Gothic style. One can still distinguish the single nave with two bays, the drip walls, and imagine the scale of the building of yesteryear. Some sections of walls of the refectory and the chapter house, as well as the foundations of a cloister, are also visible and give an idea of the organization of the convent buildings.

The ruins, dominating the surrounding landscape, offer a special atmosphere, a mixture of past grandeur and natural serenity.

      Visit the Châteliers Abbey

The Châteliers Abbey is today a very popular site for visitors to the Île de Ré, combining history, nature and culture:

      • The site is freely accessible year-round. Free parking is available nearby. It is also possible to reach the abbey from the port of La Flotte via a coastal footpath (approximately 3.5 km), offering a beautiful walk.
      • To explore further, the Musée du Platin (La Flotte ecomuseum, located on the seafront near the port) organizes guided tours of the abbey in season (from April to September). These tours, lasting approximately one hour, are an excellent opportunity to learn more about the eventful history of the place and the life of the Cistercian monks. It is recommended to register in advance with the museum.
      • The site is a place where nature has reclaimed its rights. It is interesting to observe the local fauna and flora, particularly during Heritage Days where activities focused on biodiversity can be offered.
