Every cyclist has their own route: our themed tours

The grand tour of the Île de Ré by bike

Bridge to the Île de Ré
Bridge to the Île de Ré
  • Distance : approximately 70 to 80 km (depending on your detours and variations);
  • Duration : a beautiful day (for regular cyclists) or to be split into two stages;
  • Level : easy (flat terrain, but be careful of wind management).

Attention outdoor enthusiasts and cycle tourists : cycling around the island of Ré is an unmissable experience to embrace the full diversity of its landscapes in a single adventure.

The ideal starting point is right after arriving on the island, just after crossing the île de Ré bridge. This bridge has a completely free cycle path, separated from cars, offering exceptional views of the Pertuis Charentais strait. From Rivedoux-Plage, the island's gateway, head north. The path runs along the ocean and first takes you to the charming port of La Flotte-en-Ré, before leading you through the majestic fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré.

The route then guides you across the Martray isthmus, the narrowest point of the island where the sea sometimes threatens to cut the land in two, before plunging into the heart of the Ars-en-Ré salt marshes. Continue your journey to Les Portes-en-Ré before reaching the legendary Phare des Baleines lighthouse at the western tip, in Saint-Clément-des-Baleines. The return to the mainland is gentler and more sheltered: the path winds through the vineyards of Ré and pine forests, skirting La Couarde-sur-Mer, Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, and Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, before completing your journey.

The island's terrain will never cause you any suffering, but Aeolus will! Check the weather forecast carefully before setting off : it is always wiser to start your loop against the wind so you can return peacefully with the wind at your back at the end of the day.

The "Between Sea and Forest" trail

Bike ride on the Île de Ré
  • Distance : 15 km;
  • Duration : 1 hour 30 minutes (excluding breaks);
  • Level : very easy / ideal for families and children.

If you are looking for a bike ride on the island of Ré away from the afternoon sun or the intense summer heat, this route linking Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré to Saint-Clément-des-Baleines is perfect.

The trail quickly descends under the shaded canopy of the Combe à l'Eau forest. Here, you cycle to the sweet scent of maritime pines, holm oaks and dune everlastings.

The highlight? The path runs very close to the island's most beautiful sandy beaches, including the famous Plage de la Conche des Baleines and Plage des Gros Joncs. At any time, you can park your bike at the designated bike racks to take a dip in the ocean or enjoy an impromptu picnic in the shade of the trees. A safe and rejuvenating route, ideal for families with young children or those with a bike trailer.

The "Wild Nature and Salt Marshes" trail, the great calm of the North

Salt marshes on the island of Ré
Salt marshes of the Île de Ré
  • Distance : 18 km;
  • Duration : 1 hour 45 minutes;
  • Level : easy.

Head towards the Fier d'Ars and the north of the island, where land and sea meet. This route connects the stunning village of Ars-en-Ré, instantly recognizable thanks to its church's black and white bell tower, to Les Portes-en-Ré. The itinerary is a favorite among lovers of unspoiled nature and wide-open spaces.

Cycle through an incredible patchwork of salt marshes, where salt workers perpetuate ancestral know-how to harvest fleur de sel. Take the time to stop along the Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve. Managed by the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds), it sees thousands of migratory birds pass through throughout the year: bring your binoculars ! A very pleasant alternative allows you to extend your ride to the Pointe de Loix to visit its Salt Marsh Ecomuseum.

This is the perfect route for stopping at a typical oyster shack by the side of the trail. Nothing beats a dozen ultra-fresh Marennes-Oléron or Île de Ré oysters, accompanied by a glass of local white wine from the island's winemakers to reward your efforts!

The "Heritage and Charming Villages" circuit

Cycling on the Île de Ré
  • Distance : 12 km;
  • Duration : 1 hour 15 minutes (allow double to take the time to visit);
  • Level : very easy.

If, for you, holidays mean cafe terraces, old stones, local markets and window shopping, this walk between La Flotte and Saint-Martin-de-Ré will enchant you.

The route gently hugs the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Pertuis Breton strait. In La Flotte, a village listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, lose yourself in the aisles of its only market to stock up on local produce before hopping back on your bike towards Saint-Martin. The approach via the Vauban fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is simply spectacular. All that's left to do is lock up your bike and head to the port to enjoy some artisanal ice cream at the renowned La Martinière ice cream parlor while watching the boats come and go.

The highway code, "cycle path" version

The bike paths can be very crowded during peak season. Stay well to the right, signal your turns with your arm, don't stop in the middle of the path to take a photo, and remember that pedestrians always have the right of way. Many cars also cross the paths at intersections: accidents are not uncommon in the summer, so be extra careful, wear a helmet (mandatory for children under 12), and obey all signs!

And for those who prefer to leave their bikes behind? The most beautiful walks

While the island is the undisputed kingdom of cyclists, it proves just as magical for walkers. Some protected natural areas are strictly off-limits to bicycles, guaranteeing hikers absolute tranquility and a complete escape.

  • Crossing the Bois de Trousse-Chemise : at the very end of the island, past Les Portes-en-Ré, this legendary pine forest, immortalized by Charles Aznavour, offers shaded and wild footpaths. They lead to the magnificent Trousse-Chemise beach and allow you to admire the famous Bûcheron sandbank at low tide.
  • The coastal paths of Sainte-Marie-de-Ré : between vineyards and ocean, the footpaths run along the low cliffs of the south coast. It is the ideal place to observe at low tide the impressive fish weirs, these immense stone arches built by man to trap fish, vestiges of a centuries-old tradition.
  • The labyrinth of flower-lined alleyways : the best way to truly experience the spirit of Île de Ré is to park your bike at the entrance to the villages and wander through them on foot. Let yourself be guided by the scent of hollyhocks in the cobbled lanes of Ars-en-Ré, Loix, or Saint-Martin, often far too narrow for cycling in complete comfort.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about cycling on Île de Ré

  • Is there a toll for bicycles on the Île de Ré bridge? No, access to the bridge is completely free for cyclists and pedestrians, unlike for cars. A dedicated cycle path, separate from the road, allows you to cross safely.
  • What type of bicycle is best suited for exploring the island? The classic Dutch bicycle (also known as a "city bike") reigns supreme on the island for its comfort. However, if you're planning long journeys or a grand tour of the island, an electric bike (e-bike) is highly recommended to counteract the effects of headwinds.
  • Where can you park and lock your bike safely? Every village, beach, market, or tourist site has large parking areas with bike racks. Remember to always bring a lock (usually provided by your rental company) to secure your bike, even for a short break.
