The Richelieu tower, red and black, is located at the entrance to the access channel to the port of Minimes and the old port. It symbolizes and marks by its location the northern end of the Richelieu dike, traces of which are still visible to this day at low tide.
The Richelieu dyke was built in 1627 and 1628 by Cardinal Richelieu during the siege of La Rochelle, its objective was to prevent the city from being supplied by sea by English ships. It then played a leading role in the fall of the Protestant bastion that was the city of La Rochelle.
