    • Tortillon Oyster Farm in La Tremblade, Côte de Beauté – Royan Atlantique

      Presentation of the oyster farm

Tortillon Oyster Farm is a producer of oysters, clams, and king prawns (gambas) located on the beach at La Tremblade, in Charente-Maritime on the Côte de Beauté (Coast of Beauty), in the heart of the Marennes-Oléron oyster farming basin. The farm occupies a traditional oyster hut bordering the oyster channel, a place where typical flat-bottomed boats ply between the shellfish beds and the Seudre estuary. This waterfront location is representative of the oyster farming tradition of this region, one of the most renowned in France for its seafood.

Production and direct sales at the oyster shack

The Tortillon Oyster Farm offers a selection of shellfish and crustaceans for direct sale, all produced on-site. The oysters are refined in the Marennes-Oléron basin and bear the IGP Marennes Oléron certification, guaranteeing adherence to the traditional salt-water refining methods specific to this geographical area. The available products vary according to the season and local demand, with the selection regularly updated. Shellfish and crustaceans can be packaged for transport, making them easy for visitors to take home.

      Types of products offered

On-site, the offerings mainly include oysters, clams, and king prawns, the latter often served grilled or prepared simply to highlight their freshness. Other seafood, such as mussels, may also be available, depending on the season. The immediate proximity to the oyster farms ensures a constant supply of fresh, seasonal seafood.

Tasting on site by the channel

Beyond simple takeaway, the establishment offers the opportunity to enjoy the products on-site, right at the oyster shack, practically by the water. This tasting takes place in a natural setting typical of the oyster port of La Tremblade, facing the channels and fishing huts that punctuate the local landscape. Visitors can thus enjoy seafood platters composed primarily of products from local oyster farms.

      Operation and access

Tortillon Oyster Farm welcomes visitors with varying opening hours depending on the season, with longer opening times during the peak summer season. Products can be purchased or enjoyed year-round, subject to the days and times set by the owner. Access is directly from Boulevard Roger Letelié in La Tremblade, in close proximity to the coastline and shellfish farming areas.

      Local oyster farming context

Oyster farming is a defining element of the La Tremblade area and the Arvert peninsula. The port of La Grève, characterized by its numerous fishing spots and oyster huts, testifies to the importance of this activity to the local economy. The huts line the channels that connect the oyster beds to the Seudre River, creating a typical shellfish farming landscape.

What to discover within a 30km radius of the oyster farm

Within a 30 km radius of Huîtrerie Tortillon, the region offers numerous opportunities for exploration related to nature, gastronomy, and heritage. Hiking and cycling trails crisscross the oyster beds, pine forests, and dune ridges of the Arvert Peninsula, notably towards the Coubre Forest or along the Atlantic coast. The beaches of Ronce-les-Bains and La Palmyre offer coastal areas for walks and swimming.

Those interested in maritime culture can visit the Cité de l'Huître in Marennes, an interpretation center dedicated to oyster farming in the Marennes-Oléron basin, or the L'Escale Maritime Museum in La Tremblade, which traces the history of fishing and local practices. The markets in La Tremblade and the surrounding towns showcase local products such as honey, cheeses, vegetables, and seasonal fruits, alongside shellfish. Finally, the region's typical villages, like Arvert, Étaules, and Mornac-sur-Seudre, invite visitors to discover the architecture, crafts, and estuarine landscapes that characterize this part of the Royan Atlantique.

A warm welcome, high-quality products, very well cooked. We had a great time as a family.

This could have been a great experience, but unfortunately the lengthy service somewhat spoiled it (2 hours and 15 minutes for an oyster tasting). The products were incredibly fresh, sourced directly from the source, and well-prepared.
